On July 16th, 2021 a 12-year-old Brazilian skateboarder Gui Khury dropped into the vert ramp on Day 3 of the X Games in Vista, California. This was the Vert Best Trick contest where everyone was most hyped about the return of 53-year-old skateboarding legend, Tony Hawk. Hawk had not competed at the X Games since 2003! 22 years ago, Hawk became the first to land the 900 on a vert ramp. To put this in some perspective, Hawk achieved this feat 9 years before Khury was born! So, while everyone was busy just being so stoked that Tony Hawk is back competing in an X Games event, Gui Khury keeps trying on every run to land a 1080. This was a trick he had successfully landed back in May of 2020 on a vert ramp but not in a contest. His father credited the pandemic in providing his son with the opportunity to practice the trick. Gui kept getting closer and closer to landing it with each attempt and on attempt number 7, he blew the crowd’s minds going higher than any other run and locking in the landing on the 1080!
It was an amazing moment in skateboard history. Gui Khury was the world’s first skateboarder to land a 1080 on a vert ramp back in May of 2020 and now he did it at the X Games to become the youngest gold medalist in X Games history! To add a little extra awesome sauce to this feat, Gui not only did this with skateboarding legend Tony Hawk watching but actually competing against him in the same contest! It just doesn’t get any better than this! After Gui landed the 1080, he was greeted by an embrace from Hawk at the top of the ramp congratulating him on sticking the land. Gui was interviewed at the podium, shocked that he had just won gold and thanking everyone. He acknowledged that he couldn’t believe he was getting to skate and compete with all the guys he looks up to. It was pretty awesome to see how genuinely happy and shocked this kid was to receive X Games Gold! I think it’s safe to say this is just the first of many more X Games medals to come.
Such an awesome tricks for a 12-year-old kid!
